My spyware trouble is over (for now anyway). Found out that I had a sneaky little program called CoolWebSearch on my machine that takes advantage of a vulnerability of MS’s Java engine to install itself. Then the little bugger uses a custom style sheet to transform key words in innocent script into links to its own search engine. Sneaky eh? It has many variants making it hard, if not impossible, to detect with spyware removal tools like Ada-Ware (trust me, I tried). Thanks to Narasinha for posting a link to a fix.
Review of my stats actually saved me on this one. The Mugblog came up as a result in Google for someone searching for “getting rid of runsearch”. They didn’t find what they were lookin for on Beermug’s closet, but it sure was great that they stopped by, ‘cause it sure helped a brotha’ out.
